Report on the Hermanus Flower and Eco Fair

If it’s time for the Flower and Eco Fair, it must be time for foul weather. This year proved no exception. But the hardy folk of Hermanus braved rain and wind to see the magnificent display of fynbos by the Hermanus Botanical Society in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve.
The theme for the floral display was the pollinators, and interesting facts about pollination and the different kinds of pollinators were provided.
Whale Coast Conservation provided the “Eco” in the Fair. The theme for the exhibit was sustainable energy use and production and formed part of WCC’s Sustainable Lifestyle and Sustainable Development Awareness Programme funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.
Visitors to the exhibition marquee found much of interest, especially
the energy saving technology on display. The panel by Modern
Power showing the electricity usage of various lighting options
and the savings that can be achieved over a 12-year period,
appealed to both the environmentally- and cost-conscious visitors.
The solar toys were once again a hit with both the young and the
young at heart. One wondered at times whether the toys that
went home were for the amusement of the kids or granny.
