Flowering red gum

Insect pollination is worth over R10.3 billion per annum to South Africa. Gum trees are excellent providers of the pollen (protein) and nectar (carbohydrate) that honey bees need. There are 85 different species of introduced gum trees in South Africa. Because they flower at different times of the year, they provide constant and reliable forage for honey bees. For this reason new environmental legislation requires the removal of only 6 listed species out of the 85, and only if they have a negative environmental impact. The beautiful flowering gums of Hermanus are safe.
