Disposable nappies or diapers use 20 times more raw materials, twice as much water, and three times more energy to make than cloth diapers. Dirty diapers are often ‘thrown away’ where they cause sewage and storm water blockages and pose a health hazard. Disposable diapers take about 550 years to decompose in landfills, releasing methane into the air. The millions of tons of untreated waste added to landfills each year through these diapers can be seen from space. Before the first diaper has decomposed, we might have no more landfill left to dump them.
