There are three dams in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve. The annual rainfall in Hermanus is half the world average. And the greatest demand is experienced during the driest months, namely December and January, making storage essential. The three dams were built on the Mossel River in the 1920s. They supplied ‘brown’ water to the villages of Poole’s Bay and Mossel River until incorporated into Hermanus’ general supply in the 1940s. Water from this source is still used, but only for horticultural purposes. A hike to the dams is a delight.
