The highly endangered Cape Platanna, Xenopus gilli is endemic to the extreme south-western Cape coast. It is a low-altitude species occurring within 10 km of the coast. It is found only in black, acid water in Cape fynbos heathland. If water bodies dry up it aestivates (“hibernates” underground). It does not tolerate alteration of its habitat, and the tadpoles are very sensitive to changes in water quality. The main threats are habitat loss due to urbanization, agricultural run-off and the effects of spreading alien plants. It is also threatened by hybridization with the Common Platanna, X. laevis.
