When we thank the dedicated fire fighters and mourn the loss of property and wildlife, we should also remember that fire is the way in which fynbos renews itself. From the ashes new life emerges. Without fire fynbos would not survive and while there is loss of life among fynbos creatures, they have adapted to fire over thousands of years. The big problem is the alien invasive species that cause fires to burn too hot, too big and out of control. Remove the aliens and fire will not be the threat that it is at present.
