South African Great White Sharks are descended from only 4 females and consequently 89% of all sharks tested on the South African coastline share the exact same gene sequence. The lack of genetic diversity means that these endangered sharks are extremely vulnerable to disease and habitat change. There is no evidence that South African Great Whites interbreed with either the Australian of Californian shark populations to increase genetic diversity and no evidence that the population is increasing. Our Great White Sharks are more precious than we thought.
